Original pencil sketch made in 1881 when Ives, then an art student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, visited Whitman at his home in Camden, New Jersey. In 1915 Ives presented the drawing to Powys when the novelist traveled to Detroit, Ives' home town, to begin a series of lectures. Powys subsequently gave the drawing to his sister Philippa, probably after she had visitied Whitman's home in Camden in 1923/1924. Drawing was reframed in 2012 displaying all inscriptions.
"Camden Dec. 21 1881"--Handwritten pencil inscription on drawing.
"A souvenir of appreciation to John Cowper Powys from Percy Ives. Detroit, Nov. 3rd. 1915"--Handwritten ink inscription on mount.
"Philippa Powys from John Cowper Powys"--Handwritten ink inscription originally on rear of frame.
