Item Description:10 burnished proof wood engravings out of the 11 published illustrations by George Du Maurier for 'The hand of Ethelberta' by Thomas Hardy. Engraved by Joseph Swain.
Du Maurier's illustrations appeared in the first English serial printing of 'The hand of Ethelberta' in the Cornhill magazine, from volume 32, number 187 (July 1875) through volume 33, number 197 (May 1876). Although "Cornhill magazine" is handwritten in pencil on the mountings these illustrations are likely from the work in the first book edition (2 vols, London : Smith, Elder & Co., 1876).
On India paper and mounted on thin card, 8 prints are landscape in format.
