"Received .... of B.W. Brown & William Calvert (equal owners of a Negro bought of me) the Sum of eleven Hundred Dollars for a Negro girl named Mary, twelve years old of dark complexion which girl I warrant Sound in body and Mind and a Slave for life, and I also warrant and defend, and my heirs and assigns shall warrant and defend the title to Said Negro, against the lawful claims of all other persons whomsoever."
A short added note reads: "Liberty - Feb 1st 1862 Received of B.W. Brown five hundred and fifty dollars for my undivided half of the above named girl which I guarantee in every respect named in the above bill of sale. [Signed] Wm. Calvert."
