Description
Summary:Dated December 11, 1728, the "Mapa que hace patentes los Presidios de las Provincias Internas" is a matrix or chart that summarizes the investigation done by Brigadier General Pedro de Rivera during 1724-1728 in the northern areas of New Spain, including present day Texas. This matrix lists 23 presidios (forts or military posts), and for each indicates the distance from Mexico City, latitude, longitude, number of officers, soldiers, their respective salaries and Rivera's recommendation to keep, relocate or eliminate a presidio and / or alter the level of personnel as well as possible budget savings. Of particular interest are the measurements for longitude, as they are listed between 257° and 282°, not the range typically associated with Texas, as the Spanish measured longitude in degrees east of Tenerife in the Canary Islands.
