| Item Description: | Issued in response to attacks on J.F. Marmontel's Bélisaire, and to the attempt to censure it by the Faculty of Theology of the Sorbonne. A thorough duscussion of the affair is found in John Redwick's "Marmontel, Voltaire and the Bélisaire affair." Studies on Voltaire and the Eighteenth Century, v. CXXI (Banbury, Oxfordshire, 1974). Place of publication from Bengesco, G. Voltaire, v. II, p. 190. Bibliothèque nationale's Catalogue général, v. CCXIV, col. 1738 says the place of publication is uncertain, but gives date of publication as 1767. Signatures: A-D¹²E¹²( -E12)F². In three parts, with separate pagination, but continuous register throughout. The first part includes Voltaire's Anecdote sur Bélisaire and Seconde anecdote sur Bélisaire; the second part: Les XXXVII vérités opposées aux XXXVII impiétés de Bélisaire, written by Turgot, has special t.p. with imprint: A Paris, Chez C.F. Simon ... 1767; the third part includes letters between Marmontel and Riballier, syndic of the Faculty of Theology and royal censor, a letter from Voltaire to Marmontel and a letter from Voltaire to Prince de Gallitzine [i.e. Golitsuin].
