| Summary: | A simple method of estimating the pitch-damping coefficients for axisymmetric flight bodies has been developed. The method is suitable for preliminary design and parametric studies. The procedure is based on concepts from slender body theory, but the method significantly improves the accuracy of the results through the use of correlation functions. To derive the correlation functions, extensive use of a recently developed and validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method for predicting the pitch-damping coefficients has been employed. The CFD method provides important details necessary to derive the correlation functions that are unavailable from the current experimental database. The method has been validated for a variety of nose geometries, body lengths, and Mach numbers using both experimental and computationally generated databases. |
