Description
Item Description:Music of the baroque era by English composers, for various chamber ensembles; principally featuring 1 or 2 trumpets and principally with continuo.
Provenance of the 14th work (the "Sonata in C [for] trumpet, strings, and organ," attributed here to H. Purcell) uncertain; it is not the Overture from Purcell's incidental music to Timon of Athens, which Zimmerman (1963, page 399) identifies as a 2nd sonata ("Sonata for trumpet solo") for trumpet and strings in addition to the well-known Z. 850 in D major, though the program notes accompanying the present recording suggest it is another one written at about the same time as Z. 850.
