| Summary: | Leander Perez was a Prosecuting Attorney for Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. The FBI opened an investigation on Perez for his possible violation of Civil Rights Statutes by depriving individuals of Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana their right to freedom of religion and integrated education. On January 30, 1956, in an interview, Leander Perez stated, "I have requested the investigation be discontinued at the Washington level and expects the FBI investigation be called off." The Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana contacted the Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, and they agreed that no further investigations would be done. In 1965, another Civil Rights investigation was opened on Perez for complaints that Perez harassed federal election examiners and observers in Belle Chase, Louisiana. Perez also tried to intimidate African Americans who showed up to vote by yelling and cursing at them. |
