| Summary: | Sen's breakthrough low-budget film is sometimes seen as the origin of New Indian Cinema. Set in the late 40's just after Independence, it is a satirical comedy about the upright Bengali railway officer Bhuvan Shome who sacks a corrupt ticket collector before going off on a duck-hunting expedition in Gujarat. There he meets the village belle Gauri, who turns out to be the wife of the man he sacked. He enjoys the attention she lavishes upon him and returns a "humanised" bureaucrat, determined to enjoy life to the full. |
