| Item Description: | Attributed by Evans to Benjamin West; but the eclipse predictions are almost identical with those in the New-England almanack and gentlemen and ladies diary for 1788 (New London, Conn.), calculated by Nathan Daboll under his pseudonym of Edmund Freebetter. The calculations for the moon are duplicated throughout, though the others vary because of the difference in meridian between New London and Providence. The astronomical and horological notes on the calendar pages correspond with sufficient frequency to indicate a common authorship. A second issue, with slight corrections and insertions, of The North-American calendar: or, The Rhode-Island almanack. That title was advertised in the United States chronicle, Providence, Oct. 4, 1787. Cf. Alden. The series continued from 1788 as Wheeler's North-American calendar. Account of Rhode Island College, later Brown University, page [15]. Electronic resource. |
