Item Description:The American Antiquarian Society copy is signed in ms. by Adam Witman and Thos. Jones, Jr., dated July 19th 1781, and addressed to Evan Lewis and twenty-nine others "Class number 67, Union." Annexed to each name is the sum equivalent to two months taxes for proportioning the bounty to be paid to the recruit.
Adam Witman and Thomas Jones, Jr. were the county commissioners for Berks County in 1781. This recruiting order was issued by them in compliance with "An act for recruiting the Pennsylvania line in the army of the United States" (Bristol B5343), passed June 25, 1781.
