Printed between 1777, when H. Brooke's "A fool of quality" was first published, and October 1792, when one of the subscribers (Deacon Josiah How) died. See Nathaniel T. Kidder, The first sixty years of the Milton Public Library, 1870-1931. Kidder speculates that the library whose books are listed here was a predecessor of the Milton Social Library Society, established in June 1792 and incorporated in April 1800.
