| Item Description: | Zubly, a royalist, was exiled from Savannah, Ga., in 1782, and removed to Florida. This almanac is presumably a continuation of Tobler's South Carolina and Georgia Almanack, published for 1765-1782 by John and Robert Wells at Charleston and for 1781 and 1782 by Zubly at Savannah. A preface by "the editor" expresses regret for the long delay in the appearance of the present almanac, and states that "At the usual time of preparing the copy for the press: by the evacuation of Savannah, the editor was obliged with other loyal sufferers to leave his home and fly to this place of asylum. ... The late period at which a press was at length opened here, will apologize for the omission of some things usually inserted ..." "The editor" would thus appear to be Zubly, who incidentally was related to Tobler through the marriages of his father and aunt, and whose father, John Joachim Zubly, was also one of the executors of Tobler's estate in 1765. Presumably printed for Zubly by William Charles Wells, who set up the first Florida press after emigrating there from Charleston on Dec. 14, 1782 with a pressman, Charles Wright. Wells began publishing at Saint Augustine in the name of his brother John, and began issuing his East Florida gazette in February 1783. Though the Tobler almanacs issued after his death in 1765 have been attributed to his son John, the publisher's preface to the South-Carolina and Georgia Almanack for 1764 (Savannah) states that Tobler's calculations had then been completed for publication up to 1800. The later almanacs contain no indication that Tobler Junior is the author. The Anatomy is the only illustration. Not in Evans or Bristol. Electronic resource. |
