| Item Description: | Includes hymns by Isaac Watts, verses, and the Westminster Assembly's Shorter catechism. Ascribed to the press of Samuel Kneeland and Timothy Green on the strength of the cuts and printers' ornaments used. The cut of John Rogers (page [24]) appears elsewhere only in Kneeland and Green's 1735 primer; here, it is shortened at the top. Kneeland employed several of the ornaments which appear here: on the title page, round-leaf rosettes (from 1741-1749); on the last page, square-leaf rosettes with solid centers (1741-1752) and with open centers (1729-1739); on page [33], tulip-shaped ornaments (1742-1749). Probably printed approximately 1750 but in no event printed before 1745. Page [16] contains "The late Reverend and venerable Mr. Nathaniel Clap, of Newport, on Rhode-Island, his advice to children." Clap died in 1745. The partnership to Kneeland and Green ended in 1752 with Timothy Green's removal to New London; if printed after that date, this was probably printed by Samuel Kneeland at Boston. Not in Evans or Bristol. Electronic resource. |
