The second song was written by Thomas Paine between 1768 and 1774, and first printed in America in the March, 1775 issue of the Pennsylvania magazine. Cf. Hawke, David Freeman. Paine. New York, 1794, pages 15, 30.
With two relief cuts. Cut at head of first column is identified as being used by Ezekiel Russell to illustrate an unrecorded broadside song entitled The Excellency of nothing [Boston: between 1781 and 1797]. Russell's printing office was located at Salem, Mass., in 1775 and 1776, at Danvers, Mass., from 1777 to 1781, and at Boston from 1781 to 1797.
