| Item Description: | Half-title: Mr. Clark's discourse on justification by grace. "A narrative, containing an account of the founding and settling the new gathered Congregational Church of Christ in Boston ..."--16 pages at end. This is not Andrew Croswell's "Narrative of the founding and settling the new-gathered Congregational Church in Boston ..." (Evans 6302). Croswell's Narrative describes the formation on Feb. 17, 1748, of a new church, recognized as the Eleventh Congregational Church, over which he was installed as pastor. The present work is in part a criticism of Croswell by the members of another, unauthorized, church, first meeting in 1743, to which Croswell preached on several occasions, and whose call in 1746 to serve as pastor he rejected. Ephraim Clark accepted its call and was ordained Sept. 30, 1748. The church, however, was never officially accepted in Boston; no authorized name survives, and except for this account no further record exists. (Cf. Hill, H.A. History of the Old South Church, 1890). Errata note, page 16, last count. Electronic resource. |
