| Item Description: | At head of title: Tulley 1693. Multiple states noted. In some copies, a leaf is inserted between signatures B and C with "A table of courts" and a prospectus. The state with the inserted leaf has a bookseller's advertisement on page [24] by Benjamin Harris. In the other, the same advertisement is by Samuel Phillips. Cf. Page, A.B. "John Tully's almanacs, 1687-1702." Publications of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts 13 (1912): 207-223. The cut of the Man of Signs or Anatomical Man (Reilly 1784) was subsequently copied (with the spelling "Pisses" corrected to Pisces) for Thomas Robie's An almanack of the coelestial motions, aspects, and eclipses, for 1716 (Boston, T. Fleet and T. Crump). The cut used in Robie was used again in The North-American calendar and gentleman and ladies diary, being an almanack for 1773, by Samuel Stearns (Boston: Edes & Gill and T. & J. Fleet), and is erroneously attributed to Paul Revere by C.S. Brigham in his Paul Revere's engravings, page 136. It was last used in Nathaniel Low's An astronomical diary or almanack for 1779 (Boston: J. Gill and T. & J. Fleet). The Tulley version of the cut, which appeared in his almanacs for 1693-1697, was meanwhile continued in use as late as 1723 in many of the almanacs printed by Bartholomew Green, and is also found in Nathaniel Whittemore's 1724 almanac printed by J. Allen. Bookseller's advertisement, page [24]. Electronic resource. |
