| Item Description: | Issues for 1779-1781 were entitled Thomas's Massachusetts, New-Hampshire, and Connecticut almanack. Though the preface by "Philomathes" speaks of this as "my fifth almanack," the rest of his remarks are clearly those of the publisher rather than the calculator. Though the latter was supposed by Evans to be Ezra Gleason for this series of almanacs through 1795, in the present issue he appears to be Nathaniel Low. The eclipse predictions and the calendar page calculations are closely similar to those in Low's An astronomical diary or Almanack for 1782 (Boston); and there is a significant degree of identity between the two almanacs in the astronomical and astrological notes on the calendar pages, though the present almanac contains fewer of them. It is the first almanac in the Thomas series to give aspects on the calendar pages, suggesting the work of a different calculator; and it gives occasional calculations on these pages for Yard L (Yardline, or Yard and Ell: the belt of Orion) and for P.N. (pointers north), which at this time are found only in the almanacs of Low and Daniel George. The significance of "pointers north" is discussed in Low's almanac for 1772, page [4]. The "Descriptions of the planets, shewing how to know them in the heavens," pages [17-18], is also found in Fleet's Pocket almanack for 1788 (Boston) in which the calculations and most of the other astronomical matter are identical or practically so with Low's almanac for the same year. The "Description" itself does not seem to appear in any of the almanacs published under Low's name. Electronic resource. |
