| Item Description: | At head of title: MDCCXXV. Signed on page [24]: N. Bowen. As in his almanac for the previous year, Bowen severely criticizes the 1724 almanac of Nathaniel Whittemore (B. Green's edition) on pages [17-19] and replies to that author's comments on himself. This material is omitted in the issue of the present almanac printed at Boston by J. Franklin, said to be "not a true Bowen, but a pirated almanac." Cf. Nichols, Charles L. "Notes on the almanacs of Massachusetts." Proc. Amer. Antiq. Soc., n.s. 22 (1912): 54. The calculations on the calendar pages of the two issues are basically identical but include some slight variations. The notes on the calendar pages largely differ, particularly in that the Franklin issue omits the abundant planetary and zodiacal information found in the present edition, and includes church days, which Green's issue lacks. The respective eclipse notes are versions of each other. Later almanac authors occasionally prepared similarly varying editions for different publishers, and possibly the two present versions are both legitimate and intended for different audiences.
