Description
Item Description:Identical in content and typography, except for the altered title page, with the New-England almanack, or Lady's and gentleman's diary, for 1781, by Benjamin West, issued simultaneously by Carter. As of this year, Carter broke off with West, and he thenceforth continued the New England almanack, which West had been calculating, over the pseudonym of Isaac Bickerstaff. The series continued until 1814 under this title, and thereafter as The Rhode Island almanack by Isaac Bickerstaff. Cf. Chapin, H.M. "Check list of Rhode Island almanacs," Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, n.s. volume 25 (1915): 24-26.
Two states noted by Alden. In what appears to be the second state, the calendar for Jan. 1, 1781 reads "I 23" under F. Sea." In the earlier state of this issue, the same column reads "I 9"."
