Description
Summary:A devotional handbook in Mixtec, compiled by the Dominican father Fray Benito Fernández for the instruction of the Mixtec Indians. The handbook begins with a church calendar, listing the seasons of the church year, and the dates of important saints' days. The sign of the Cross, Apostles' Creed, Salve Regina, Lord's Prayer, and the Ave Maria are given in Mixtec, accompanied by the Latin and/or Spanish versions of the prayers as well, arranged in double columns on each page. Fernandez also includes lengthy explanations of the meaning of these important prayers. He presents many basic concepts of the Catholic faith in Mixtec--some with Spanish translations--such as the Ten Commandments, the seven sacraments, the five commandments of the Church, the seven Deadly Sins, the five senses, corporal and spiritual acts of charity, and holy water. In addition, there is a general confession in Mixtec. The handbook concludes with various prayers, a musical score for plain chant, a table of contents, and an errata.
