| Summary: | Many schools across the United States are implementing drug-testing programs. The Killeen Independent School District implemented a drug- testing program in all of its secondary schools. The program was implemented without any formal research or statistics about the use of illegal drugs by student athletes. This study sought to gain information about the level of student athlete drug usage at Ellison High School as compared to national levels and to obtain student athlete attitudes about this program. The researcher employed quantitative methods using descriptive statistics to describe the results of the research. The Content Validity Ratio was used to validate the student questionnaire. The students involved in the study were all student athletes at Ellison High School (grades nine through twelve) who had consent from their parents. The rate of return on the survey was 88 percent. 343 of the 381 students who were eligible to participate in the research completed the survey. Of those 343, 336 questionnaires were used to conduct the research. The major findings of the study were: 1) student athletes are using illegal drugs at the rate of 31 percent compared to the national average of 63 percent; 2) 62 percent of the student athletes view drug testing as having some affect in deterring drug usage; and 3) students did not view drug education programs as a better way of deterring drug usage. From these findings, the researcher was able to make several recommendations for improvement of the drug-testing program. |
