| Summary: | This study looked at the relationships between family risk factors (i.e., marital status, parental level of education, parental generational status, number of people in the home, and household yearly income) and parents' styles of acculturation on the academic achievement of Mexican or Mexican-American students. Teachers in first through third grades nominated the three highest and lowest achieving readers of Mexican descent in their classrooms and sent consent forms home to the parents. Sixty-nine parents granted consent and completed and returned a demographic questionnaire and the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans - II (ARSMA-II; Cuellar, Arnold, & Maldonado, 1995). Reading scores from standardized tests were obtained for 70 students to validate their teachers' ability to accurately predict the students' actual reading abilities. Results from the study indicated a moderately strong relationship between students' actual reading abilities and their teachers' judgment regarding the students' reading ability. However, no statistically significant relationships were found between family risk factors or parental styles of acculturation and students' reading ability. These findings are discussed in the context of previous research and directions for future research are offered. |
