Description
Item Description:Sometimes attributed to Henry Carey and to Jonathan Smedley, Dean of Killala.
Formerly attributed to Jonathan Swift.
Verse.
A burlesque on Smedley's 'An ode to the Right Honourable the Earl of Cadogan', London, 1719, it is "regularly printed with that ode, even in Smedley's own 'Poems', 1722. John Nichols .. suggested this was 'by one of the Irish wits (probably Dr. Delany)'; but since it satirizes Swift more than Smedley it may conceivably be Smedley's own." (Foxon).
