| Item Description: | The Cushing Library/Chapman Texas Collection copy is part of the Floyd & Louise Chapman Texas & Borderlands Collection. Title from caption. Editor: 1811-1814, H. Niles. The Cushing Library/Texas & Borderlands copy (v.4:no.20 (1813:July 17)=no.96) includes an account of what the publisher calls a 'hasty translation of the principal parts of the Declaration of Independence by the province of Texas.' The Declaration tells of differences with the monarchy in Spain, including charges of corruption and tyranny, and references the national and personal success of the newly formed United States of America who declared their independence just 30 plus years earlier. In August 1812, with the assistance of the United States, José Bernardo Gutiérrez de Lara (an unreservedly committed believer in Mexican independence following Hidalgo's 1810 revolt) and Augustus William Magee (a former officer in the US Army) organized an expedition to take Texas from Spain. Their Republican Army of the North crossed from Louisiana into Texas on August 7, 1812, and quickly captured Nacogdoches, Trinidad de Salcedo, La Bahía, and San Antonio from the woefully equipped Spanish. Independence for the State of Texas under the Republic of Mexico was proclaimed in San Antonio in April 1813. |
