| Summary: | The goal of this study was to investigate personality characteristics of pedophiles and nonpedophiles as measured by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) in order to improve sex offender treatment programs. The Pedophile Treatment Scale (PTS), a critical item list of the MMPI-2, was utilized to assess personality characteristics. The 39 item PTS included six subscales that addressed sex offender treatment concerns. These subscales were Sexual Issues, Cognitive Issues, Self-Concept Issues, Social Issues, Family Issues, and Personal Issues. Subjects participating in this study were 98 incarcerated male pedophiles and 109 incarcerated male nonsex offenders. In addition to MMPI-2 scores, personal information was collected and reported regarding age, race, prior sex offenses, and number of incarcerations. The demographic and conviction data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and compared pedophile and nonpedophile responses on the PTS and the six subscales with t tests. Additional procedures included a factor analysis which resulted in a two-factor solution comprising Depression and Criminal Thinking and a MANOVA which was used to compare pedophiles' and nonpedophiles' scores on the Depression and Criminal Thinking factors. While the PTS scores did not differentiate between incarcerated pedophiles and incarcerated nonpedophiles, interesting issues were identified. Examination of Depression and Criminal Thinking could be valuable directions of future research. Conclusions and recommendations are discussed. |
