Description
Summary:The author investigated the use of the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) and the Malingering Probability Scale (MPS) to differentiate genuine and malingered Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Both total and subscale scores of individuals diagnosed with DID (n = 20) were compared to scores from three groups instructed to feign DID: clinicians (sophisticated malingerers, n = 20), undergraduates (unsophisticated malingerers, n = 25), and mixed, non-dissociative, psychiatric inpatients (n = 21). Relative to the DID sample, the combined scales best differentiated the inpatients (82.9%), the MPS maximally separated the undergraduates (75.6%), and the DES mean score best differentiated the clinicians (68.3%). In some instances, however, differentiation was no better than chance. The combined scales correctly classified 47.5% of the clinicians, and the DES mean score differentiated 57.8% of the undergraduates. The validity of the MPS for use with DID populations is questioned because its specificity was consistently poor. It is suggested that future studies focus on the use of structured interviews rather than or in addition to self-report measures for identifying malingered Dissociative Identity Disorder.
