Description
Summary:Milligan Farms and Ranches, in cooperation with Texas A&M University, coordinated an effort to evaluate the birth, growth, and carcass traits of the progeny of one Nellore and 11 Brahman sires. Traits evaluated were birth weight, weaning weight, hot carcass weight, longissimus muscle area (ribeye area), yield grade, and marbling score. Red Angus cows were randomly bred by artificial insemination to the 12 different sires over a two year period. These matings occurred at the Milligan Farms and Ranches location in Western Nebraska. The first calves were born in the spring of 2000 and the last calves were born in the spring of 2001. A total of 174 male calves were evaluated for birth, growth, and carcass traits. The average birth weight and weaning weight were 47.60 ± 0.50 and 229.64 ± 2.40 kg, respectively. The carcass traits averaged 332.42 ± 2.71 kg, 79.78 ± 0.56 cm², 3.06 ± 0.06, and 422.70 ± .14, respectively, for hot carcass weight, longissimus muscle area (ribeye area), yield grade, and marbling score.
