| Summary: | The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of special education on education support of ethnic students. In addition, the study examined factors impacting African American students in special education as compared to Hispanic and Anglo American students as perceived by administrators and teachers in selected rural secondary schools. The population for this study included 17 campus administrators and 184 teachers at 3 secondary rural campuses from Regions 13 and 20, with 9th-12th grades. Descriptive statistics and chi-square statistics were used for this study. A review of the literature indicated that there are education deficiencies within the public system of education in the United States. However, because of recent changes in our society, administrators and general education teachers must begin to change their attitudes concerning the segregation of students with disabilities. Recommendations based on this study: 1. Educators must find ways to extrinsically motivate students in special education. A reward system for students was determined to be significantly effective when dealing with this population. The reward system should be understood by all students in special education. 2. Faith-based activities such as spiritual awareness, volunteer services, academic development, and social functions were identified as being significantly important in enhancing school climate for special education populations. 3. Educators must explore a variety of classroom accommodations and modifications such as shorter instructions (1 or 2 steps), visual aids (pictures, flash cards, etc.), study sheets, previews, and summaries in an effort to meet the needs of the special education population. Recommendations for further study: 1. A need exists to study the perceptions of administrators and teachers on the elementary level regarding the impact of special education on education support of ethnic students. 2. A need exists to study the perceptions of administrators and teachers in other regions regarding the impact of special education on education support of ethnic students. 3. A need exists to study first-year teachers' perceptions of special education on education support of ethnic students at the elementary level. |
