| Summary: | The intent of this study was to analyze the leadership concepts developed for the National FFA Essential Learnings Project based on the analysis of high school agricultural science teachers' perceptions. The study's specific objectives were to determine leadership concepts necessary for high school agriculture students and FFA members to be successful in their intended careers. Secondly, the study focused on determining the level of leadership attainment FFA members reach through FFA leadership in conjunction with leadership concepts from the National FFA Essential Learnings Project. The study's final objective was to assess leadership development needed by high school students upon entrance to higher education institutions and/or the workforce. The target population for this study consisted of agricultural science teachers who were interested in teaching leadership to their students. The purposive sample consisted of agricultural science teachers who attended a leadership workshop at the 2002 Professional Improvement Conference for Texas Agriscience Teachers and students at Texas A&M University enrolled in the student teaching block during the fall semester 2002. 131 agricultural education teachers and college students enrolled in the student teaching block participated in the study; the convenience sample used included 125 respondents. The conclusion of this study found that agricultural science teachers with experience teaching leadership development courses have stronger perceptions of the importance of leadership concepts for their students' career success. Other influential factors in the agricultural educators' perception of leadership development affecting career success included the age of the respondents. Gender and number of years teaching agricultural education were not influential factors. As a result of this study, it is recommended that FFA members and high school agriculture students have the opportunity to take leadership courses during their high school and FFA careers. Furthermore, agricultural education programs should offer leadership development courses for career success purposes. FFA members who receive leadership development training personify the perception of higher career success beyond their high school career. Further research should be conducted concerning the impact of leadership development on career success. |
