Description
Summary:The development of a mandated statewide inventory of technical and continuing education courses was to facilitate the training of a quality workforce by enabling Texas community colleges to respond quickly to the needs of business and industry. The purpose of this study was to explore the attitudes and perceptions of selected community college faculty regarding the Workforce Education Course Manual (WECM) Project and its importance to the community college. A non-random, purposeful sample of 11 community college faculty members was interviewed for the study. Data collection was accomplished through a series of semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed inductively using the constant comparative method. The findings of the study revealed that the instructors' attitudes towardperceptions of the WECM were mixed. Those instructors who already took an active role in curriculum development on their respective campuses were likely to participate in WECM activities. The instructors' participation in WECM activities did not automatically ensure their positive opinion of the WECM Project, however. The researcher found that three factors related to communication seemed to separateaffect the instructors' and affect their attitude perceptions toward the WECM project: the organizational structure of the institution, the flow of workforce information within the institution, and the level of guidance the instructors received from their instructor's direct supervisors. What seemed to be a negative attitude perceptiontoward of the WECM Project was actually related to a lack of communication concerning the implementation processes. Each instructor whose initial reaction to the WECM was positive had positive communication experiences related to one or more of the above three factors. The results of the study underscored the importance of the State's continued funding ofneed for additional projectsresearch to design, document, and test the Workforce Education Course Manual maintenance system and to develop and utilize the procedures and evaluation techniques that willwould assure a reliable and viable WECM maintenance strategy. The results of the study also identified the need to develop Recommendations included the development of aa process to efficiently communicate this the WECM system efficiently to the appropriate stakeholders and to explore various methods in which to enable faculty canto participate directly participate in similar projects.
