Description
Summary:Design of an 8-bit current mode, ripple-folding analog to digital (A/D) converter is discussed. The ripple folding technique and the possible implementations in different process technologies are summarized. To have an A/D converter compatible with the standard CMOS processes, the switched current technique is used for the implementation. The architecture is a cascade of 8 minimum and maximum detectors pipelined by 7 current memories. The A/D converter, which is designed in TSMC 0.35 []m CMOS technology, achieves 8 bits of resolution at a conversion rate of 100 MHz with an SFDR of 62 dB. The total power consumption by the analog circuitry is 120mW, more than half of which is dissipated by the 8 current comparators. The achieved INL and DNL values are less than 0.4 LSB.
