| Summary: | This study compared the treatment acceptability of four interventions that commonly are used with children with autism, as rated by school psychologists, special education teachers, and parents of children with autism spectrum disorders. Using an analog methodology and the Treatment Evaluation Inventory- Short Form, ratings of the acceptability of behavioral interventions, structured teaching, social skills training, and medical interventions were explored. The influence of age of child and problem severity on acceptability ratings also was investigated. Major findings were as follows: (a) psychosocial treatments received more favorable ratings than medical interventions, with structured teaching receiving the highest ratings, followed by social skills training, behavioral interventions, and medical interventions; (b) parents rated all interventions more favorably than school psychologists and special education teachers; and (c) treatment acceptability ratings did not vary significantly as a function of age of child or problem severity. These findings are discussed in the context of previous acceptability research and directions for future research and practice are offered. |
