| Summary: | The purpose of this study was to investigate the therapeutic factors found in a group therapy treatment program for male batterers. Data for this study was obtained by administering the Therapeutic Factors Questionnaire, the Brief Symptom Inventory, and Group Evaluation Forms to 22 male batterers. The 6 therapists that led the treatment groups also completed therapeutic Factors Questionnaire. Results indicated that batterers believed that they personally benefited from the group and that the information they gained from the group would help them cope with their problems. They believed that the therapeutic factors of instillation of hope, catharsis, altruism, and interpersonal learning input were the most helpful and the therapeutic factors of guidance and identification were the least helpful to their treatment. This study also showed that the batterers valued the therapeutic factors consistently during the life of the groups and that batterers who showed improvement did not value the factors differently than batterers who did not show improvement. Results also showed that therapists and group members did not agree on which therapeutic factors were most and least helpful to the group members. Recommendations for future research and clinical practice were discussed. |
