Description
Summary:The explicit purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) instrument. The LASSI is designed to measure students' use of learning and study strategies and methods. Critics have cautioned the use of the instrument for developmental and study skills programs and have recommended more research, particularly in the area of test score reliability and validity, before the LASSI is used with developmental populations. The inquiry had four primary research objectives. The first objective was to examine the reliability of the data from the LASSI instrument and determine whether or not there were differences between developmental and non-developmental students regarding reliability. The second research objective examined the predictive validity of the data from the LASSI regarding grade point average and retention and whether there were differences between developmental and non-developmental students. The third research objective examined the concurrent validity of the data from the LASSI and whether or not responses on the LASSI were similar to responses on the MSLQ and the SAMS. The fourth research objective examined the construct validity of the data from the LASSI. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted using structural equation modeling to determine the best model for the LASSI data. The results from the analyses showed LASSI data are reliable; therefore, institutions have an instrument that will provide consistent results. Because the data from the LASSI was shown to have predictive validity, particularly among subsets, institutions have an instrument to predict the academic success of their students. While the LASSI data was shown to have concurrent validity, no construct validity was established for the instrument. Therefore, institutions are cautioned against using the LASSI as a tool to diagnose entry-level student deficiencies and create individualized prescriptions for learning and study strategy training.
