520 |a The Songs Inspired by Literature Project - SIBL - is committed to creating a more literate America. The project has launched an awareness and outreach campaign for one of this country's most critical, least discussed problems: adults who cannot read or write. The project is a non-profit organization based in Northern California made up of musicians, authors, teachers, and journalists. SIBL's programs and projects inspire adults who need to improve their literacy skills, and attract volunteers and supporters on behalf of literacy providers, many of whom do not have the financial resources or expertise to launch such a massive public awareness campaign. Partners include the California State Library, The Library of Congress and Friends of the Library USA. Together, they are using the universal language of music as a vehicle to engage, inspire and reinforce the magic of literature and the power of reading.
