| Summary: | The value of knowledge as an asset is becoming increasingly recognized. Unfortunately, there is little agreement on the concept of knowledge management and particularly on an appropriate architecture to provide foundational support for a knowledge management system. Providing an environment that facilitates sharing and creating information and knowledge, and encourages organizational members to expand their perspectives (and thus those of the organization) appears to be important. Establishing this environment depends on having a reliable knowledge management architecture that facilitates information/knowledge acquisition, discovery, and sharing and supporting codification, storage, and management of explicit knowledge. A knowledge management system also needs to increase the number of perspectives in organizational memory. This can be achieved by focusing on acquiring new information, creating new knowledge by combining existing knowledge with changes in environmental variables, and by examining all information, both incoming and existent, from a variety of perspectives. The first objective of this study is to develop the architecture of an integrated system to support knowledge management in organizations operating in tumultuous environments. The second objective is to demonstrate how one component of that system performs information-building and decision-aiding tasks that ultimately contribute to development of organizational memory. This is accomplished by encouraging users to consider and apply a wide range of perspectives during problem-solving. This study shows that individuals who are encouraged to consider multiple perspectives during a problem-solving task may deviate from their innate perspective base in a similar problem-solving task at a later date. These findings are encouraging and have implications for organizations in areas such as facilitating group problem-solving, mitigating organizational member differences, and growing organizational memory with a base of multiple perspectives. |
