Summary:This work presents an investigation of two new possible space applications of shape memory alloys. The first application uses these alloys as active devices to optimally reorient solar panels in space. The thermal issues related to the actuation of the shape memory alloy actuators are presented, along with a solution using thermoelectric devices. The design of the reorientation system is described, with the difficulties encountered and their possible solutions. The second application presented uses shape memory alloys as passive devices for the vibration isolation of the StarNav I: a new generation of startrackers. The finite element implementation of the shape memory alloy tubes used as vibration isolation devices is presented. This implementation's purpose is to bring a better understanding of the mechanical behavior of the tubes. The application of this system to the existing design of the StarNav I and its influence on this design is then developed.
