| Summary: | This study sought to empirically evaluate Irwin and Millstein's (1986) biopsychosocial model of adolescent risk-taking behavior using a sample of adolescents ranging in age from 11 to 18 years. Three groups comprise the sample: (a) adolescents diagnosed with cancer (n = 46), (b) adolescent siblings of children diagnosed with cancer (n = 44), and (c) healthy adolescents without a diagnosed sibling (n = 55). Path analysis indicated that the model did not fit well as initially specified, but following modification it exhibited a close fit with the data. Tests of specific paths of the model were also reported. Tests of invariance across groups indicated that the fit of the model did not significantly vary for group. However, this test was limited by low power, and examination of the path coefficients suggests that meaningful group differences may exist. Multivariate analyses indicated that age at diagnosis could not predict a variety of psychosocial variables and that the three groups were not differentiated by those variables. Also explored were the bivariate relationships between the psychosocial variables and risk-taking behavior and the ability of those variables to predict risk-taking behavior. Factors affecting the results and their implications are discussed. |
