|a "Triumph of Survival: The Origins of Hungary's Foreign Policy, 890-1038" is a chronological examination and contextual analysis of the origins of Hungary's foreign policy from the rule of Arpad through the reign of King St. Stephen. Included is a bibliography, chronology, pedigree charts and maps. Primary documents from Hungarian, German, Vatican and Byzantine sources give a foundation and context for the earliest Magyar attempts to develop a foreign policy. A new paradigm is offered as a means to understand Hungary's foreign policy objectives from 890 until 1038. Magyar foreign policy is divided into three phases. The first phase (890-970) includes Arpad and his successors. The second phase (970-997) covers Geza's reign. The third phase (997-1038) covers King St. Stephen from his rule as prince of the Magyars (997-1000) through his reign as king of Hungary (1000-1038). This work presents the novel view that King St. Stephen created and implemented a new foreign policy for Hungary. King St. Stephen's foreign policy created a dynamic dialectic between the pre-Geza and Geza foreign policy objectives. King St. Stephen's vision of Hungary's place in Europe complemented the vision for Europe jointly created by Pope Sylvester II and Emperor Otto III, i.e., a Christian Europe ruled according to the Civitas Dei. This work interprets primary sources in new ways and offers an understanding of Hungary's role as a buffer nation between the Byzantine and German empires and between the northern and southern Slavs of eastern Europe. A unique interpretation is offered for Germany's Lebensraum in eastern Europe, especially as it concerns the modern day republics of eastern Europe. The origins of Hungary's foreign policy prove that King St. Stephen was the operative force that brought the Magyars into the community of Latin Europe. It is King St. Stephen's foreign policy that ensured the preservation of the Magyar people, the security of Hungary and the exclusion of Germany from annexing the lands that today belong to the countries of eastern Europe. King St. Stephen's foreign policy is as relevant to the countries of Europe today as it was a millennium ago.
