| Summary: | This study explored the applicability of J.E. Helms' (1990) Womanist Identity Model to Asian American women's identity development. It also examined the relationships of assertiveness and acculturation with Asian American women's womanist identity attitudes. The womanist identity attitudes of research participants were measured by the Womanist Identity Attitudes Scale (J.E. Helms, 1990). Participants' assertiveness and acculturation levels were measured using the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (S.A. Rathus, 1973) and Suinn-Lew Asian Self-Identity Acculturation Scale (R.M. Suinn, K. Rickard-Figueroa, S. Lew, & P. Vigil, 1987). The validity of Helms' theoretical womanist model was analyzed with a confirmatory factor analysis. Results indicated a lack of fit of Helms' model for Asian American women. Further statistical analyses found that higher assertiveness scores positively correlated with the lower stages of the womanist model, specifically Pre-encounter and Encounter. There was no relationship found between acculturation and the stages of the womanist model. Implications for theory, research, and therapy are discussed. |
