| Summary: | Purpose. The intents of this inquiry were (a) to design and field test a model instructional unit to be used in a basic statistics course for both prospective and practicing school principals and (b) to use these results to specify recommendations for preparing other instructional units that serve the same target population Design. This inquiry was conducted in three phases. The first two phases were dedicated to developing and testing a model instructional unit that prepared principals to use basic statistical methods on the job. The first phase of this instructional unit focused on developing skills needed to construct univariate distributions, interpret the univariate findings, and prepare written descriptions of those results. The second phase of this instructional unit focused on completing similar skill development exercises for bivariate distributions. The third phase was dedicated to preparing recommendations for others who wish to design additional instructional units. Findings. The first phase produced a six-step instructional procedure to be implemented in seven three-hour class sessions. Field testing indicated that (a) the required class sessions could be reduced from seven to six and (b) the original phase one instructional objectives should be extended to include the skill of making effective oral presentations of univariate findings. The second phase produced a four-step instructional procedure to be implemented in four three-hour class sessions. Field testing suggested a need (a) to address the skill of making effective oral presentations of bivariate findings and (b) to improve report preparation skills by adding a new classroom activity devoted to revising and resubmitting the initial phase two written reports. Replication. Both phase one and phase two findings were reported in a form that allows others to replicate this model instructional unit. Accordingly, these findings reported detailed information for the instructional objectives and skill development exercises used in each of the ten procedural steps in the model. Recommendations. Phase three provided ten recommendations organized into two parts. The first part included four general recommendations for anyone desiring to create additional statistical training units for principals. The second part presented six recommendations to improve a replication of the model instructional unit developed in this study. |
