| Summary: | The purpose of this study was to evaluate leadership development from the perspective of how the environment in which a person exists supports or hinders his or her own development. Specific findings were found to address the four following research questions: 1. What factors should be included in the best environment for leadership to develop or emerge? 2. What are the leadership traits or characteristics common among good leaders that support leadership development? 3. Do adult learning styles and the environmental factors that impact leadership development have similar traits and characteristics? 4. What is the correlation between leadership development and the environmental factors that impact leadership development? The data was collected using a self-developed questionnaire to evaluate the impact key environmental factors and the areas of learning/education, environmental influences, constraints/enhances, and individual leadership development factors. It was administered to a population of 66 individuals from both business and educational organizations. The sample population included people in mid-management positions and those training to be mid-managers. Participants were asked to evaluate each question using a 5-point likert scale of strongly agrees to strongly disagrees and strongly support to strongly hinder based on the questionnaire sections. Comparisons were made between defined environmental factors and various leadership variables within the questionnaire. The research also studied the relationship between adult learning styles and the environmental factors that impact leadership development. The findings revealed that open communication from management, having well-defined expectations, support from others, and recognition for work well done were some of the most supportive factors for developing leadership. The best leaders have good organizational communication, can be trusted, and see leadership development as a life long process. The adult learning style of being purpose-driven revealed the strongest correlation with the environmental factors. The predominate factors were that the individual knew what they wanted and why they wanted it, in addition to understanding the purpose of what they were learning. |
