| Summary: | Psychologist impairment is a serious issue that can exist and be detected at the student level. Identification of impaired students is necessary to prevent harm to clients and to maintain public trust in the field of psychology. The APA ethical principles for psychologists explicitly state the obligations of psychologists to intervene in cases of colleague impairment. This study investigated the willingness of students to intervene in cases of peer impairment, and factors that influenced students' decisions to intervene or not intervene. The study also looked at the likelihood of graduate students intervening in cases of suspected peer impairment when they understand the relevant APA ethical principles. Roughly half of the graduate students' responses indicated a willingness to intervene with an impaired peer in a manner compliant with APA ethical principles. Factors reported as affecting students' willingness to intervene included concerns for protecting themselves, the impaired peer, and the impaired peer's clients. Results from this study contradict earlier findings that suggested students who could identify the correct procedure according to the ethical principles are also likely to follow these procedures when dealing with an impaired colleague. |
