| Summary: | The purpose of this record of study was to determine the effectiveness of the Texas City Independent School District's (TCISD) Alternative Learning Center's program on the improvement of student behavior, attendance and academic achievement. The subjects for this study consisted of all students and professional staff at the Alternative Learning Center during the spring semester of the 2000-2001 school year. The research for this study was conducted in four steps using multiple methodologies to strengthen the findings. First, the researcher obtained information regarding the students' socioeconomic status, attendance rate, expulsion offenses and average of core grades prior to the students being assigned to the Alternative Learning Center. Second, the researcher obtained a copy of the mission statement and the goals of the school. Third, the researcher engaged in a period of observation of the school's day-to-day operations. Last, an instrument was administered to the students and professional staff to solicit their perceptions in order to estimate the influence of the Alternative Learning Center's impact on the improvement of student behavior. The data from the surveys were disaggregated by respondent category and then reassembled under the separate questionnaire items. The results were reported using numerical techniques where appropriate. Anecdotal information was cited directly under each heading to present a portrait of the Texas City Independent School District's Alternative Learning Center. These survey data were combined with observations by the researcher and demographic data about the school, the staff, and the students to derive meaning in response to each of the research questions that guided this study. The findings revealed the ALC educators provided a caring and sensitive environment that created close bonds and respect among students and staff that impacted student achievement. The qualitative and quantitative data in this study revealed that significant gains were being made on the improvement of student behavior, attendance, and grades. Recommendations called for alternative programs to specifically address self-esteem as a component incorporated within the state-mandated social skills curriculum. It was further recommended that universities provide courses and staff development to assist educators in the area of stimulating and motivating disruptive students. |
