| Summary: | The data link layer is one of the most vital entities within the layered network protocols in communication. Various communication protocols implement varying modes of the High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC) protocol to achieve their objectives that combine channel and application characteristics. Current focus and development in this field has been to build on the functionality of overlying layers such as the Networking and the Transport layer. Different flavors of HDLC exist in industry today, for applications ranging from modem connectivity to satellite communication. This research aims at a directed effort towards optimization of the parameters that govern the implementation of HDLC, which is used in such a wide variety of applications. During the process of research, implementations of typical HDLC transmitter-receiver pairs were built at each stage. The purpose of this was to provide a framework that yielded methods of optimization, and that would allow future development and study. Verilog was used as the Hardware Description Language, in conjunction with various tools to illustrate timing interaction and parameters of synthesizable code. |
