| Summary: | This study explored the effects of cancer and its treatment on body image concerns in adolescents and young adults. Body image for participants was measured with the Body Image Inventory and the Offer Self-Image Questionnaire (body image subscale). The effects of health status (cancer vs. healthy) and sex on body image were investigated. The impact of a lowered body image in cancer patients was also investigated in terms of possible effects on treatment adherence. Finally, the participants' scores on the two instruments were examined for correlation. Results indicate that females in both groups (cancer and control) had poorer body images than males. Further, lowered body image in cancer patients was associated with poorer treatment adherence. Finally, the instruments used in the study were demonstrated to be strongly correlated. |
