Summary:In 1964, in a small Arab village in the Galilee, the villagers living under military rule must cope with the delicate coexistence of social ritual and deep, unhealed wounds from the revolution of 1948. The narrative centers around such incidents as the military commander's discovery that one of the villagers is issuing work permits, the killing of the ruler's son, as well as the life of Mabruq, who lost his parents in the war and has grown up playing the village fool.
