Summary:This series is a collection of twenty individual full length films representative of the British Documentary Film Movement. The films cover the twenty-two year period of British documentary production starting with the works of the EMB (Empire Marketing Board) and continue through the postwar era.
John Grierson coined the term "documentary" and then went on to found the British Documentary Film Movement. His filmmaking career began at the Empire Marketing Board. Three examples are presented here: Drifters, showing the British herring industry; Industrial Britain, started by Robert Flaherty and finished by Grierson; and Song of Ceylon, produced by Grierson and directed by his protégé, Basil Wright.
