| Summary: | This project applies discourse analysis to investigate the use of code switching in Asian American womens literature. My reading of representations of code switching in Asian American womens works reveals that code switching is more common than acknowledged, and minority American writers use it as a more subtle strategy than recognized. Asian American women writers adopt and recreate code switching from everyday speech and use it as a powerful device to address ethnicity and gender in order to construct a new cultural identity. The project traces the development of code switching among Asian American women writers since the end of World War II and places their texts within larger historical and social contexts. It argues that the use of code switching by these minority women writers can shed light on fundamental social and political issues in multicultural American society, including the formation of minority group identities and ethnic boundaries. Texts examined include fiction and autobiography written by Japanese American authors Min Okubo, Hisaye Yamamoto, and Monica Sone; Korean American authors Ronyoung Kim and Nora Okja Keller; South Asian American author Bharati Mukherjee; and Chinese American authors Fui Sin Far, Jade Snow Wong, Gish Jen, Fae Myenne Ng, Amy Tan, and Maxine Hong Kingston. |
